Sonic Shake Flavours – I Tried Them All in 30 Days, and Here is What No One Tells You

Sonic shake flavours arranged on a table during a 30-day tasting challenge, with a Samsung phone showing shake photos and a notebook with tasting notes.

This month my cousin made a bet with me. He said I couldn’t name three more Sonic Shake flavours without checking the menu. I told him I could name all of them because I visit Sonic often. He laughed. So I decided to try everyone in 30 days and write down notes on my phone.

I went to Sonic 18 times in one month. Sometimes after work at 7 PM on Sunday with my wife. I used my Samsung Galaxy S23 to take pictures of each cup. I wrote taste notes in Google Keep. My wife thought I was crazy because our fridge had a lot of leftover shakes.

Most blogs just repeat the list from the Sonics website. No one tells you which one is too sweet, which one is good for kids, or which one might make your stomach feel bad if you order Large. So I am writing about what I experienced after drinking them.

Two Different Worlds Inside Sonic Shake Flavours

When I first looked at the Sonic menu, I thought ‘shake’ was just ‘shake’. But at my local store in Texas, the carhop explained there are two separate groups.

The first group they call Classic. This is plain smooth shake. They take their vanilla soft serve ice cream and add syrup or real fruit. That is it. No cookie pieces. No cake. Just soft drinkable ice cream. Flavours here are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, banana, caramel and peanut butter. My father only drinks from this group because he says he does not like chewing his shake.

The second group they call Master. This one is like a full cake in a cup. They still use vanilla soft serve, but they throw real chunks inside – OREO crumbs, cheesecake bits, peanut butter, and chocolate pieces. When you sip, you get bits in your mouth. It is thick; you need a wide straw. Flavours here are OREO chocolate, OREO cheesecake, OREO peanut butter, cheesecake, and strawberry cheesecake.

If you want smooth and light, stay with Classic. If you want crunchy and heavy like dessert, go to Master.

Classic Flavours – What They Really Taste Like

Six Sonic shake flavours displayed in a clean grid: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Banana, Caramel, and Peanut Butter.

Vanilla:

This is the mother of all shakes at Sonic. Everything starts with this. Taste is sweet cream, very plain. I only order vanilla when I want to add my own things. On its own it felt boring to me, but my mom likes it because it is not too strong.

Chocolate:

My safe order when I am confused. It tastes like you melted good chocolate ice cream. Rich and dark. A small cup is 670 calories, a medium 850, and a large goes to 1410. That large number shocked me when I saw it on the Sonic app. I now only take Small.

Strawberry:

This one is my wife’s everyday order. They put real strawberry fruit inside; you can see small red seeds. It tastes fresh, not like a fake pink colour. Small is about 570 calories, less than chocolate. If you don’t like too much sugar rush, this is better.

Banana

: I did not expect to like this, but I did. It has banana puree and tastes like a homemade banana milkshake but is more creamy. A mini banana is only 390 calories. That is the lowest I saw on the whole Sonic menu. When I am trying to control calories, I pick this.

Caramel:

Very, very sweet. The first time I ordered a medium caramel, my mouth was sticky for one hour. Now I only order a mini, which is around 380 calories. It tastes like toffee candy.

Peanut Butter:

Strong nutty taste, not just flavour. It sticks to the roof of the mouth. Small is around 620 calories. Alone it is too heavy for me. I like it mixed with chocolate. Half peanut butter, half chocolate tastes like Reese’s.

Master Flavours – My Real Experience

Cheesecake:

Creamy with a little sour taste like real cheesecake. Has small white chunks. The medium is around 750 calories. Good if you like cheesecake but don’t want OREO.

Strawberry Cheesecake:

Same cheesecake but with strawberry fruit mixed in. My cousin orders this every time. Medium, around 790 calories. Sweet and fruity, both.

OREO Chocolate:

My number one in Master. OREO crumbs plus chocolate syrup. You get crunch and chocolate at the same time. The medium is about 910 calories. I always take small because medium is too much for one person.

OREO Cheesecake:

OREO plus cheesecake pieces for both. Very rich. Medium, around 940 calories. I tried to finish. I bought a large one for half price at night, and I left half a cup in the car. Wasted money.

OREO Peanut Butter:

Strongest taste. Peanut butter and OREO are both heavy. The first 3-4 sips feel amazing; after that, it feels like you ate a full cake. Medium is 1020; large goes over 1500 calories. I ordered a large one, and my stomach hurt at night.

Sonic also brings short-time flavours. Last August I saw Pineapple and Chocolate Covered Strawberry for only 12 days. It was not on the outside board, only inside the Sonic app. So always check the app if you want a new taste.

sonic shake flavours: 3 Stupid Mistakes I Made

  • Mistake 1: I tried to be creative and mix chocolate, banana and peanut butter all three together. I told the carhop to put all three. It cost me $6.38 with extra charges and tasted weird, like all flavours fighting each other. Now I never mix more than two.
  • Mistake 2: I ordered a large master because it was half price after 8 PM. The Sonic app shows half-price shakes after 8 PM daily. I thought Large in half price was a saving. I paid $3.79 but drank 1400+ calories at 9 PM and could not sleep. Now even at half price I order small.
  • Mistake 3: I checked prices and flavours on Google. Google showed old flavours that my store stopped selling. I went and asked for a flavour, and the carhop said we don’t have it. Now I only trust the Sonic app. I open the app; it shows my exact local store menu with the correct price and calories.

How I Pick the Right Flavour Now – My Simple Steps

  • Step 1: I open the Sonic app on my phone. I allow location so it finds my nearest Sonic automatically.
  • Step 2: I tap Order Now, then go to Shakes. I see Classic and Master with photos.
  • Step 3: I decide smooth or crunchy. If I want smooth and fresh, I pick Classic strawberry or banana. If I want dessert and I am very hungry, I pick Master OREO chocolate.
  • Step 4: I pick a size. First time for any flavour, I pick mini. It is 10 oz and cheap, so if I don’t like it, I don’t waste money. If I already love it, I pick Small. I never pick Large in Master now.
  • Step 5: I go to the custom page. It shows add-ins with prices like OREO +$0.49 and peanut butter +$0.70. It also shows extra calories. I always remove whipped cream to save 40 calories.
  • Step 6: I pay in the app and get points. I also save notes in MyFitnessPal on my iPhone so I remember which one I liked.
  • If you are at Sonic without a phone, press the red button and say ‘Small Classic Strawberry, no whip’. They understand.

Combos That Actually Taste Good

After trying many random combos, these are the only ones I repeat.

Strawberry plus Banana Classic:

Half strawberry, half banana. Tastes like a fresh fruit shake but creamy. I ask the carhop at the speaker, and most times they do it for free.

Chocolate plus Peanut Butter Classic:

Tastes like a peanut butter cup. Lighter than Master OREO Peanut Butter.

Vanilla with caramel and banana:

Tastes like banana toffee pie. I order a small vanilla and add caramel syrup and banana fruit. Costs $0.49 extra but is worth it.

Vanilla with extra strawberry fruit only:

If you want light and not too much syrup, this is best. Real fruit pieces in a vanilla base.

What never works:

Chocolate plus caramel plus OREO – all three. Too sweet, too many textures, and costs extra.

Which One For Which Person?

  • For kids: Mini Vanilla or Mini Strawberry Classic. My 8-year-old nephew drinks Mini Vanilla easily. It is 10 oz and not too sweet. Also comes in the Wacky Pack kids’ meal cheaper than the separate mini.
  • For low calories: Mini Banana 390, Mini Caramel 380, Small Strawberry 570. Stay away from Master if you count calories because all Master Medium start at 750.
  • For sharing: One Medium Classic with two straws. I and my wife do this. One medium strawberry is $5.79 and enough for two. Two Smalls would be almost $10.
  • For chocolate lovers: Small Classic Chocolate or Small OREO Chocolate Master. Small is enough; large is just extra sugar.

How I Save Money

  • I use the Sonic app every time because it gives half-price shakes after 8 PM and happy hour from 2 PM to 4 PM with half-price drinks.
  • I joined Sonic Rewards. After spending about $35, I got a free shake worth $5.49. Also got a free shake on my birthday.
  • I never order on DoorDash or Uber Eats now. The same Small Classic was $4.99 on the Sonic app but $6.49 on Uber Eats. That is $1.50 extra plus a delivery fee.
  • I share one instead of ordering two. Saves 50% directly.

Last Thing I Learned

  • Sonic shake flavours are more than just a list on the wall. There are 6 Classic, 5 Master, plus short-time ones, plus you can mix.
  • If you are new, start with Small Classic Strawberry or Small Classic Chocolate. If you love cookies, try Small OREO Chocolate Master.
  • My top 3 after trying all 11: first is Strawberry Classic for fresh taste, second is OREO Chocolate Master for dessert, and third is Banana Classic for light.
  • Don’t order Large in Master, don’t mix three flavours, and always check the Sonic app for the real menu at your store.
  • I still go to Sonic twice a month. I just order Small now, sip slowly in the car with AC on, and enjoy instead of drinking fast while driving.

FAQs About Sonic Shake Flavours

At my local store in Texas, the carhop told me Chocolate Classic and OREO Chocolate Master sell the most. Strawberry Classic is also very popular with families. If you are first time, chocolate is safest to try.

Mini Banana Classic is around 390 and Mini Caramel is around 380, lowest I saw. In Small size, Small Strawberry is lower at 570 than Small Chocolate at 670. All Master flavors are higher, starting around 750 for Medium.

Yes, you can. You can ask at the speaker or in the Sonic app to mix like half strawberry, half banana or chocolate and peanut butter. Some stores do free, some take $0.49 extra. Don’t mix three; the taste gets weird.

No. All Sonic shakes use vanilla soft serve made with milk and cream, so there is no dairy-free or vegan option right now. Even fruit flavours have a dairy base. If you are dairy-free, try Sonic slush or iced tea instead.

Master shakes have real pieces inside – OREO cookie crumbs, cheesecake chunks, peanut butter, and chocolate. Current ones are OREO Chocolate, OREO Cheesecake, OREO Peanut Butter, Cheesecake, Strawberry Cheesecake. They are thick, and you chew while drinking.
